Maclaren Techno XLR

In comparison to the other four pushchairs on our list, the Maclaren Techno XLR is the no-frills option. But frills are heavy and costly, so take them away and you’re left with an ultra lightweight buggy that offers fantastic value for money.

A lot of thought has gone into the design of the Techno XLR, which is an incredible buggy as it can be used from birth, thanks to a reclinable seat with four positions and a carry cot that fits safely into the seat of the buggy.

At only 7.5kg you can easily lift it onto a bus and up stairs. It’s also the most compact buggy out there, so you can squeeze into busy train carriages and shops without feeling like you’re trying to part the sea.

What you gain in convenience you lose in smoothness however, with the small wheels offering less cushioning from the lumps and bumps of the pavement, so needless to say it’s not one to take off-road. You’ll also need two hands to push, or you’ll find it making a detour towards the nearest wall, ankle or road.

Overall though, it’s perfect if you’re always on and off public transport, or if you need a second buggy for grandparents and other baby carers. It’s also worth noting that Maclarens (including their excellent double buggy) are superior to other ‘umbrella’ buggies out there, with a surprising robustness that will ensure it lasts far longer than cheaper alternatives.

KEY FEATURES: Weight, longevity.
